Overview

HR professionals require a sound grasp of their organisation’s commercial and financial priorities to provide effective consultation and understanding of critical business challenges.

This one-day workshop is therefore designed to give HR professionals in all sectors the knowledge, skills and confidence to be a strong voice at the decision-making table.  It focuses on demystifying the financial language and techniques that sit at the heart of most business decisions. 

You will learn how to:

  • Explain the critical financial metrics used by business leaders and other stakeholders to measure performance and the main factors that drive their achievement
  • Define how HR can best help achieve your organisation’s financial objectives
  • Use financial information and management reports to manage a business unit and identify areas for improvement
  • Ask smart questions and play an active part in the decisions that affect the numbers.  

The day itself

This highly engaging day is designed for up to 12 people from different organisations, with limited financial experience or understanding.  For each topic covered you will receive easily accessible guidance from the course leader plus time to embed your leaning through:

  • Working in small groups of 3-4 people on exercises and cases; and
  • Discussing relevance to your own role and organisation

Topics covered include:

  • Reading the P&L, Balance Sheet and Cashflow – how used to run a business
  • Defining assets and liabilities - the finance vs. HR perspective
  • Measuring value and Return on Investment (ROI)
  • Profitability vs. cash-flow
  • Reading financial management information and budget reports
  • Costing and financial decision making

Course leader

The day will be led by Andrew Needham, a highly experienced finance trainer renowned for his ability to make learning finance both engaging and enjoyable. Andrew works with people of all levels, from first line managers to board executives across a broad range of leading blue-chip organisations.
